Managing Partner Job Description

We are seeking a Managing Partner for our University of Maryland alumni venture capital fund that will invest in companies led by school alumni. Our organization, Launch Angels, runs similar alumni funds at Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale, and MIT. We have a tested playbook, processes, staff, and proprietary systems to help you raise, invest, and successfully manage a fund. Like our sister funds, this fund will target school alums who are looking to easily create a venture portfolio of high-potential companies and connect with fellow alums around a common interest. Our private, for-profit funds are friendly with but not endorsed by nor affiliated with the school. This will be an evergreen opportunity, with a new fund being raised every year. This is a full-time, salaried position, with carry, bonus, and benefits as part of the compensation package. You will work out of a regional office within driving distance of the school. In addition to the strong support of the Launch Angels executive and administrative team, you will be backed up by a salaried Vice President in deal sourcing and diligence, as well as fellows and interns we help you recruit.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Launch Angels team to leverage our knowledge, systems, processes, and staffs to raise and run your fund
  • Recruit core nucleus of supporters and IC members, complementing your own skill set and experiences with those of others
  • Interact with school and business department/incubator in particular to build cordial relationship
  • Represent the fund to strategic partners, press, entrepreneurs, and the general public
  • Recruit and vet Investment Committee members and other team members
  • Initiate and build long-term relationships with lead investors (VCs) that span geography and industry focus
  • Lead portfolio creation, sourcing investment opportunities, overseeing due diligence, and executing deals
  • Plan and oversee social elements, marketing initiatives, and investor outreach, with Launch Angels support
  • Help define and lay the groundwork for succeeding funds
